Motorist clocked speeding along N55 during road safety initiative

In the first two hours of a speeding clampdown initiated by Gardaí today, a motorist has been clocked exceeding the speed limit along the busy N55 Athlone to Ballymahon Road in Glasson.

The motorist was caught driving 95 km/h in a 80km/h zone along the N55 at Lissoy, Glasson in the first two hours of 'National Slow Down Day' today (Friday).

According to the Garda Press Office, GoSafe checked the speeds of 16,344 vehicles, and detected 21 vehicles travelling in excess of speed limit in the first two hours of safety initiative around the country this morning.

In one case, a motorist in Ballina in Mayo was caught driving at 109 kilmetres per hour - almost 30km above the 80km zone along the R314 at Rathroeen.

Another driver in Donegal was clocked at a frightening 132 km/h in a 100km/h Zone on the N13 at Teevickmoy, Stranorlar.

Gardaí have renewed an appeal to drivers to comply with speed limits in order to reduce the number of speed related collisions, save lives and reduce injuries on our roads.

The aim of the 24-hour speeding clampdown, which began at 7am and is supported by the Road Safety Authority (RSA), is to promote safer driving behaviour among motorists and to encourage all of society to work to help prevent road traffic collisions, and to ultimately keep communities safe.
