More Athlone road closures coming into effect in weeks ahead

A number of road closures on the west side of Athlone are due to come into effect over the coming weeks in order to facilitate ongoing work connected to the €114m Main Drainage Scheme project.

In late April, a three-month closure of a section of Abbey Road, on the east side of the Shannon, came into effect as a result of the Main Drainage works.

This is now due to be followed by road closures at Deerpark Road and McQuaids Bridge, which are scheduled to begin from Monday next, May 13, and last for more than two months, until July 19.

The local road at nearby Canal Banks is due to close for just under four weeks, from May 27 until June 21.

In addition, sections of the Clonown Road (L-8009 and L-8010) are also facing a lengthy closure, which is due to last from Monday, May 20, until July 28.

This is the latest in a series of closures affecting users of the Clonown Road over recent years, with sections of the road having been shut periodically due to flooding and to facilitate flood defence works.

The closures at Deerpark Road, McQuaids Bridge, Canal Banks and the Clonown Road, were advertised by Westmeath County Council last week.

The local authority said diversions would be signposted when the closures commence.
