MAP: The upcoming Athlone road closures starting from next week

Uisce Eireann has outlined details of the next set of road closures in Athlone as a result of its ongoing €114m Main Drainage Scheme project.

For parts of May, June and July, road closures will be in effect on the west side of Athlone at McQuaid's Bridge (Deerpark Road), Clonown Road, and Canal Banks.

The dates of the closures are as follows:

McQuaid’s Bridge: May 13 to July 19

Clonown Road: May 20 to July 28

Canal Banks: May 27 to June 21

Uisce Eireann said that during the closures, only local and emergency access would be facilitated.

"This work is part of Uisce Éireann's ongoing efforts to reduce sewer flooding in the town and address non-compliant sewer overflows into the River Shannon," said the utility.

"We regret any inconvenience that the delivery of these necessary works may cause."

The closure will cause particular inconvenience for some residents on the Clonown Road, who will be facing a lengthy diversion, lasting for more than two months, in order to access their homes.

Since late April, a three-month closure of a section of Abbey Road, on the east side of Athlone, has also been in effect as a result of the Main Drainage works.

The May meeting of the Athlone Moate Municipal District is taking place on Monday (May 13) and will include a motion from Cllr Paul Hogan who is calling for "a meeting with the Main Drainage contractors to discuss the communication strategy around road closures in the district".
