Trapped swan 'in distress' saved by Athlone Sub Aqua Club

Athlone Sub Aqua Club recently rescued a swan that was found to be trapped in a fishing line and a barbed wire fence.

On Wednesday last, the club responded to a call that a swan was in distress downstream of Athlone town. Club members Brendan Donnellan and Jude Kilmartin launched the club boat and, shortly after passing through Athlone Lock, found the swan.

Brendan and Jude quickly freed the swan and brought her back to Athlone town to be checked over by a local veterinary nurse, Ronan Walsh. After Ronan removed the fishing line from the swan's leg and confirmed all was otherwise well, she was released back into the river Shannon.
