Athlone's Dean Kelly NS to mark 100-year anniversary milestone

A local educational milestone - 100 years of the Dean Kelly National School in Athlone - will be celebrated at a special event in June.

Located on the west side of Athlone, the Dean Kelly National School first opened its doors in 1925 and has been a cornerstone of primary education in the town to the present day.

The school caters for boys from second to sixth class and under the guidance of school principal, Brid McCoy, who has been in the role since September. It currently has 94 pupils, along with 12 members of staff.

Speaking to the Westmeath Independent, the school principal called on former staff members and past pupils to reunite at the upcoming celebration and share fondly their Dean Kelly NS experiences.

"We are now beginning our preparations in earnest to celebrate our milestone anniversary in June. So, to make this special occasion even more memorable, the school is appealing to all former staff members, past pupils, old acquaintances and friends to join forces with us and celebrate 100 years of education in Athlone," Ms McCoy said.

With a mid-June date in mind for the celebration, Ms McCoy is hoping it will feature photographs, memorabilia and artifacts from times past in reflection of the school's history.

"We are looking forward to reflecting on the prominent role of the Dean Kelly National School within the educational fabric of Athlone," she said.

"To that end, it would be great to hear from all those associated with the school in times past and speak with them about their education and experiences through the different eras," said Ms McCoy.

She said she was keen to gather stories reflecting human interest and humour of previous school days at the Dean Kelly.

A date will soon be confirmed for the reflection celebration.

It's set to include a Mass, music, and a historical feature display. A plaque will also be unveiled to help mark the milestone anniversary.

"We would love to hear from those who were associated with the school in times past. The school is synonymous with education, but we would also love to hear of sporting feats and memorable tours undertaken by former students and teachers," added the school principal.

"Our hope is that we can put on a historical display of photographs and memorabilia that will serve as a proud reflection of the school's history.

"Those who have photographs and memorabilia of interest can call us on 090 6492000, email: deankellyboysns@hotmail.com or simply drop in to the school.

"We are encouraging a universal approach to this occasion, so that it can be one to remember in June," Ms McCoy concluded.
