Gorilla crashes launch of Athlone author's new children's book!
Athlone Library was buzzing with excitement on Saturday last, March 22, as local teacher and author James Hannon launched his latest children’s book, An Incredibly Daring Heist Brought to You by a Ten-Year-Old Criminal Mastermind - the second instalment in his beloved Ballinacrack Chronicles series.
The event began with a heartfelt speech from Hannon, who thanked his family, friends, the library staff, and his colleagues and students from Summerhill National School for their support.
He also paid special tribute to illustrator Fiona Moran, whose vibrant artwork brings the world of Ballinacrack to life.
Things took an unexpected turn during the reading when a man in a gorilla costume suddenly interrupted the event — to the delight and laughter of the audience! The surprise appearance mirrored one of the book’s memorable characters, adding a playful and immersive twist to the afternoon.
A lively Q&A followed, with young readers asking thoughtful and curious questions about the writing process, the characters, and what’s coming next in the series.
While Hannon signed books and chatted with attendees, Fiona Moran led a creative workshop where she showed kids how to draw some of the book’s quirky characters - a highlight for many aspiring young artists.
Speaking at the event, Hannon said, “This book was such a blast to write, and I really think this series could be something special. Ballinacrack is an exciting, chaotic and extraordinary place that ignites a spark in kids' imaginations. I hope as many children as possible get a chance to read it.”
The first book in the series, The Thrilling Adventures of an Extremely Boring Boy, quickly became a favourite in schools, and the new release delivers even more twists, laughs, and heart.
Athlone Library provided the perfect setting for the launch, once again showcasing its commitment to fostering creativity, literacy, and a love of storytelling in the community.
