Multicultural choir in Athlone appeals for new members

Athlone-based multicultural choir 'One Town, One Voice' is appealing for new members.

Founded in 2013 by Graham Clifford, the mission of the choir is to bring together the local community and those moving to Ireland, and to integrate them through the power of music.

"Originally it was supposed to last for six weeks, and we had roughly 17 people involved in the choir," said Athlone musician and choir organiser, Anne Marie Hynes. "We secured additional funding to continue the choir beyond the six weeks, but the numbers have dwindled since."

The 'One Town, One Voice' choir features different groups from across Ireland, with the Athlone group based out of the Athlone Family Resource Centre on O'Connell Street.

The choir has featured people from across the globe, including those from Asia, India, Africa, Czech Republic, and local Irish people.

"It's free of charge, and it's a non-committal group, so people are more than welcome to come down and see how they feel. We won't take it to heart if it's not for you!" Anne Marie said.

"We usually start with a five minute warm-up. This is a vocal warm up which might involve the Shanti Shruti Box (an instrument similar to a harmonium).

“I work with the voice holistically, so it's all about welcoming ourselves in, and welcoming our voices, with a bit of self-love woven in. The songs that we rehearse all have a very uplifting and empowering theme. Then we end with a cool down, and by thanking ourselves for coming and being a part of the community."

Next month (on May 25) a total of 19 'One Town, One Voice' choir groups from across Ireland will all come together to perform in the Dean Crowe Theatre in Athlone.

"There are two songs which all of the groups will sing together," Anne Marie said. "We would love to perform individually as well, however we just don't have the numbers at the moment."

The choir comes together every Wednesday from 7pm to 8pm in Athlone Family Resource Centre.
