Community united in grief over passing of popular figure

Tributes have been paid to prominent Athlone businessman Damien Kelly who died suddenly this week.

A Company Director of the long-established family-run business Planalife on Bastion Street, Damien's passing has united the community in grief and sadness.

Well known within local sporting circles, Damien was a highly regarded member of Monksland United who said it was "deeply saddened and heartbroken" about the passing of "a manager, colleague and dear friend".

"Damien wasn't just a manager within our club but was a true pillar of Monksland United. He was a dedicated, hardworking, enthusiastic coach both on and off the pitch and was always on hand to give his support to the club.

"He was a man that always loved to be a part of Monksland United and was a dedicated servant to our club where he managed all four teams within the club and also served on the club committee during his time with the club."

Offering condolences to his wife Deirdre, sons Andrew and Charlie, his brother Conor, sister Tracy, his parents Brendan and Anne and all extended family members, the club said "it didn't just lose a manager, we lost a life long friend and somebody who left an impression on us all."

St Joseph's FC also paid tribute to their "former coach, chairman, dedicated volunteer and long-time main sponsor."

"On behalf of all at St Joseph's FC, from our U6 to U16 teams, coaches, and committee members, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the Kelly and Shine families on the sudden passing of Damien Kelly. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time."

Describing Damien as "an absolute gentleman", CCFL club St Peter's extended their sympathies to the family and friends of their former player.

"The committee, coaches and players of St Peter’s FC wish to extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Damo Kelly on his untimely passing.

"Damien was an absolute gentleman, a former player and for many years through Planalife was the main sponsor to our football club. Damo and the Kelly family’s generosity, advice and support was constant and was particularly evident in our 2016 FAI Junior cup run.

"We would like to also extend our condolences to our friends in Monksland United where Damo was a hugely popular and very well liked manager."

Damien is deeply regretted by his heartbroken wife and best friend Deirdre, sons Andrew and Charlie, parents Brendan J. and Anne, brother Conor, sister Tracey, parents in law Mike and Betty (Shine), sisters in law, brothers in law, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, relatives, work colleagues, neighbours and a wide circle of friends.
