May Day lyrical sunbursts celebration in Athlone

The May Day poetry, storytelling and music event held on May 1 at The Athlone Bookshop attracted over fifty attendees. The ‘Lyrical Sunbursts’ event was organised by local poet Amy Abdullah Barry, in collaboration with Steve Reynolds of The Athlone Bookshop.

The bookshop was decorated with bluebells, dandelions and apple blossoms to welcome May Day.

Five students from the Clonown NS; Logan, Kian, Luke, Itzan and Yeva impressed everyone with their enthusiastic and beautiful readings.

In January this year, Amy facilitated poetry workshop with the students of the Clonown NS through Poetry Ireland Writers in School scheme.

Some of the students were given a platform to publish their poems from a school project in A New Ulster, March issue, with thanks to editor Amos Greig.Other performers on the day included Eugene McGivern, Anthony Merrigan, Liadh and Rob Irwin.‘Lyrical Sunbursts’ is supported by Poetry Ireland through the Bright Ideas bursary.

Amy extended her sincere thanks to all attendees for their kind presence and support.
