Burke welcomes free book bags for Westmeath pre-schoolers
Families in Westmeath with children starting school in September are being encouraged to pick up a free My Little Library book bag at their local library by the Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment, Peter Burke TD.
The initiative, aimed at supporting children as they move from pre-school to primary school, offers specially chosen books and helpful resources to make the transition that bit easier.
“This is a lovely initiative for families in Westmeath. Starting school is a big step for any child and these book bags are designed to help them feel more confident and ready for that change," Minister Burke said.
Over 110,000 free books will be available nationally as part of the My Little Library initiative, with versions in both English and Irish. Each book bag includes books about starting school, going to the toilet, making friends, and more - along with a library card wallet and information for parents.
“The bags will be available throughout the summer, so there’s plenty of time for families to drop into their local library and collect one. It’s also a great opportunity to join the library, if they haven’t already.
“Reading together is such a simple but powerful way for parents to support their child’s early learning, and for many children, this might be the start of a lifelong love of reading.
“I’d really encourage any parent or carer with a child starting school this year to pick up a bag and take that small first step into what can be a really positive habit - regular visits to the library," Minister Burke added.
The initiative is part of a wider effort to connect families with local libraries and encourage early literacy and learning.
