Local man made CEO of Canadian insurance giant
Athlone native David Harney has been appointed president and chief executive of the global Canadian international financial services company Great-West Lifeco.
The son of Rena and Tom Harney (Kiltoom), Mr Harney has been the company’s chief operating officer for Europe since 2020, overseeing the Irish Life and Canada Life organisations in Ireland, the UK and Germany.
A former pupil of Ballybay NS and Marist College student, David, who will succeed current CEO Paul Mahon on July 1, has been with the organisation for over 35 years and held a wide range of progressively senior roles reflecting his breadth and capabilities as a leader and business builder. During his time with Irish Life, David led the Corporate Business Division, including leading it through recovery following the global financial crisis.
In 2016, he was appointed CEO of Irish Life, where his vision to drive greater integration among Irish Life’s business units helped expand the businesses’ market presence and deepen customer relationships. In 2020, David was appointed President and Chief Operating Officer, Europe for Great-West Lifeco, and in 2024 broadened his responsibiliites to include oversight of Lifeco’s reinsurance business.
Harney said he was looking forward to building on the company's solid foundation and momentum.
