TUS Athlone to hold fitness testing for postmenopausal women in Midlands

The Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) Athlone are preparing to host three one-time fitness and health testing days for postmenopausal women living in the Midlands region.

The free events are being held by Rita Trentz, PhD Researcher at TUS Athlone, Sport & Health Sciences Department as part of her PhD research.

"My research focuses on promoting physical activity and improving health outcomes for postmenopausal women, a group often underrepresented in health promotion efforts," said Ms Trentz,

"This life stage is marked by hormonal changes that increase the risk of several chronic conditions, including osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, and breast cancer, the latter being one of the most common cancers among Irish women.

"Physical activity plays a key role in managing and reducing these risks, but many women experience barriers to staying active after menopause."

The aim of the fitness testing event is to better understand women’s health and physical activity levels and help shape future health promotion strategies tailored to that demographic.

Participants will take part in a series of simple physical tests, including assessments of strength, flexibility, aerobic fitness, and body measurements and complete health-related quality of life questionnaires.

Each participant will receive their fitness level results and a free booklet with practical information on the benefits of physical activity and nutrition during this stage of life.

The testing will be held on June 10 and June 12 at 4.30pm and 6.30pm, as well as on June 26 at 10am, 1pm, and 5.30pm.

Sessions are free, in-person, and open to women who haven’t had a period in at least 12 months.
