Annual domestic abuse awareness campaign started by Athlone Garda to take place on Friday
'Go Purple Day', An Garda Siochana's national day for domestic abuse awareness, will take place this Friday, May 30.
The annual initiative was started in 2020 by Athlone community Garda Stacey Looby as part of an effort to strengthen community partnerships between domestic abuse services and Gardai.
Members of the public can support 'Go Purple Day' by embracing the colour purple at home, while at work, or among friends and family. "Wear it, paint it... all ideas are welcome," said the Gardai.
Those getting involved in the initiative are encouraged to share a photo via social media, using the hashtag #GoPurpleDay2025.
On its Facebook page, An Garda Siochana in Westmeath said Go Purple Day "aims to increase awareness of domestic abuse and the supports available to those experiencing it.
"Above all we ask that you speak to one another about this issue. Without realising, you might just give someone the crucial support they have needed to begin to share some of the fear they are dealing with alone."
Over the last number of years, there has been a year-on-year increase in reporting rates of domestic abuse. In 2024, An Garda Síochána received in excess of 65,000 domestic abuse related contacts, or an average of 1,250 reports every week.
If you, or someone you know, is a victim of domestic abuse, contact 999 or 112, or your local Garda Station.
