Deep sadness at passing of popular Moate community figure
Moate man Peter Dolan, who was a longstanding advocate for improvements to the town and wider community, has died after an illness bravely borne.
The father of four, who was aged in his mid-70s, passed away peacefully yesterday (Wednesday) at the Midland Regional Hospital, Tullamore, surrounded by his family.
His passing will be deeply mourned across the Midlands and particularly in Moate, where over the years he played prominent roles with the Moate Action Group, Moate Men's Shed, and Moate Amateur Drama Society, among others.
Born in Mountbellew, Galway, Peter lived in Moate from nine years of age onwards.
He worked as a planner with county councils in Offaly, Westmeath, Laois, and Roscommon before bringing that expertise to his community work following his retirement in 2009.
He was instrumental in the creation of a five-year action plan for Moate which was published in 2015 and focused on making the town a more attractive place to "work, live and do business in".
A warm and gregarious personality, he was also involved in the local Arts scene, acting on stage with Moate Amateur Drama Society, participating in 'Tops of the Towns', and achieving All Ireland success in recitation in the Scór competition.
Predeceased by his parents, Nicholas and Mai, Peter will be dearly missed and forever loved by his family, wife Carmel, children Daire (Basra), Nicky (Keane), Martin and Neil, his brothers Martin, Nick and Philip, sons in law Rajpaul and Cathal, daughter-in-law Tauna, grandchildren Emma, Finley, Roisin, Lucy, Milo and Robin, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended family, neighbours and friends.
He will be reposing at his home (N37 XW08) tomorrow, Friday, May 30, from 4pm until 7pm. House private today (Thursday).
His removal will take place this Saturday to the Carmelite Church, Moate, arriving at 11.50am for funeral prayers.
His funeral Mass will then take place at 12 noon, and is due to be streamed live here. Burial will take place afterwards in Kilcurley Cemetery, Tubber.
Family flowers only are requested, with donations in lieu, if desired, to Moate Tidy Towns.
May he rest in peace.
