Inaugural Athlone Bike Fest takes place this weekend

The inaugural Athlone Bike Fest, featuring a packed schedule of activities for cyclists of all ages and skill levels, takes place this weekend.

From Saturday, May 31, to Monday, June 2, the family-friendly festival, sponsored by Shannon Academy, promises a weekend packed with cycling events, live music, food and fun in the heart of Athlone.

Athlone Bike Fest chairperson, John Henson, said the weekend will be more than a "celebration of cycling".

"Set against the backdrop of the scenic River Shannon and Old Rail Trail Greenway, Athlone Bike Fest is more than just a celebration of cycling, it's a community celebration that brings together outdoor adventure, local culture and healthy living," Mr Henson said.

"The hank holiday weekend will feature a major attraction each day plus numerous fringe events such as music, food stalls and bicycle stands," John added.

On Saturday, May 31, at 9.30am a charity spinathon will take place at the Athlone Regional Sports Centre in aid of Esker House Domestic Abuse Support Services.

"The work carried out by this charity in supporting victims of domestic abuse is fantastic. Please register a team of four by emailing athlonebikefest@gmail.com," John said.

On Sunday, June 1, at 2.30pm there will be a major picycle Parade through Athlone, starting at Burgess Park.

"The public will be treated to viewing all types of bicycles from vintage, sports, tandems and trishaws. Everyone is encouraged to bring along their bicycles and join us for this unique event. Feel free to decorate your bike if you like," John stated.

Meanwhile, on Monday, June 2, in Burgess Park the public will are set to be enthralled by the skills and bravery of the Savage Skills BMX stunt team.

"This is an event not to be missed with three performances starting at 11.30am, 1.30pm and 3pm," John stated.

Additional activities include a test of local knowledge while participating in a local bike hreasure Hunt, while Baysports will have their kayaks in Athlone during the weekend for those who would like to venture out on to the River Shannon.

"Whether you're a seasoned cyclist, a curious beginner, or just looking for a great weekend out with the family, Athlone Bike Fest offers a safe, welcoming space for every ability and age.

"Cycling is a fantastic way to explore Athlone and stay active, and this festival is all about making it accessible, safe, and fun for everyone, he added," Town Mayor, Cllr Frankie, Keena, who serves the role of committee treasurer, said.

Fellow committee member Morgan Fagg has always enjoyed cycling and is delighted to be part of Athlone's inaugural Bike Fest.

"Cycling is a fantastic fun way to get around the town in a healthy, efficient, environmental way," Morgan said.

Mayor Keena thanked Westmeath County Council, Westmeath Sports Partnership, Golden Island Shopping Centre, Athlone Regional Sports Centre, Outdoorsey.ie, Buckley’s Cycles, Shannon Academy and Baysports for their sponsorship and support so far.
