Death of prominent Midlands businessman Christy Maye

The death has occurred of Christy Maye, one of the most prominent business people in the region.

Christy Maye was best known as the owner of the Greville Arms Hotel in Mullingar, former owner of the Bridge House Hotel, in Tullamore, and developer of the Bridge Centre shopping centre in Tullamore

He was also a founder member of Tullamore Show and served as PRO for many years.

He passed away in the early hours of the morning after an illness. Funeral details have not yet been announced.

Born at Forgney near Ballymahon in Co. Longford, Christy Maye initially worked on the family farm, and as a commercial traveller, before becoming a psychiatric nurse in St Loman's Hospital.

He made his name in the entertainment and business world of the region due to his now legendary Christy Maye's Disc-A-Go-Go, the first mobile disco, which he established in 1965, before going on to develop a hugely successful business career.

The late Mr Maye was a key figure in the business world of the Midlands, and the Greville Arms Hotel and Bridge House Hotel, under his direction, became two of the main entertainment venues in the midlands.

He was known for his support for the wider business community, and was also a farmer, racehorse owner and board member of Midlands 103.

The late Christy Maye is survived his wife, Ellen and three children, Jason, Lee-Anne, Jillian, to whom sincere sympathy is extended.
