Hundreds of Westmeath and Roscommon groups share over €300,000 in enhancement funding
A total of 362 community and sports groups in Westmeath and Roscommon are to benefit to the tune of over €320,000 in funding announced this morning under the Local Enhancement Programme (LEP).
Some 235 groups in Westmeath have been allocated total funding of €172,055.70, while in Roscommon 127 groups received a total allocation of €151,685.62.
Moate Town Team is one of the big winners locally, with an allocation of €5,000. Grant allocations in Westmeath varied from €250 up to €5,000, and Moate Town Team was one of only four groups in the county to receive €5,000.
In Roscommon, amounts varied from €151.57 up to €5,261.40.
Some of the groups to benefit locally include Abbey Road Active Retirement, Athlone Family Resource Centre, Athlone River Festival, Athlone Sub Aqua Club, Ballykeeran Tidy Towns Committee, Beechpark West Residents' Association, Garrycastle GAA, Lough Ree Yacht Club, Moate Active Retirement, Willow Park Residents' Association, Monksland Active Retirement Association and Moore Community Games.
The funding announcement was made this morning by Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary and Minister of State with responsibility for Community Development and Charities, Jerry Buttimer.
The LEP 2025 was launched in November 2024 and the €7 million available included €1 million in current funding to support local groups with ongoing running costs.
The funding also provides capital supports for many small community groups and organisations, particularly those who serve disadvantaged areas in rural and urban areas.
This morning's funding announcement was welcomed by Minister of State Kevin 'Boxer' Moran, who pointed out that the Local Enhancement Programme provides capital supports that are essential for many small community groups and organisations.
Minister Moran said: “The programme provides vital support to community groups, allowing them to improve facilities and purchase equipment for community use, aligning with my own priorities of supporting local initiatives in this area.”
“The programme provides small-scale funding for projects which range from purchasing IT equipment to minor renovations to buildings and this year also provides an opportunity to groups to apply for help with their operational costs.”
The Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht’s Local Enhancement Programme 2025 is administered by Local Community Development Committees, with support from the Local Authority, in each area.
