Lough Ree RNLI to host open day at Coosan Point
Lough Ree RNLI will host an open day at its headquarters in Coosan Point, Athlone, this Saturday, June 21, from 2-5pm.
Since it first opened in 2022 the Lough Ree RNLI building has become a focal point for visitors to the area and the local community.
On Saturday afternoon there is an opportunity for the public to have a look inside the station, which is home to the charity’s lifeboat ‘Tara Scougall’. The 'state of the art' facility also serves as the training centre for the local volunteer crew and is equipped to facilitate rapid response in emergency situations.
The RNLI shop at the station will allow visitors the opportunity to purchase memorabilia, souvenirs and gifts from a wide range of stock.
While more than six new volunteers have joined the Lough Ree RNLI crew in the past year, the charity is always open to welcoming new members. An excellent training programme is provided for those who offer their skills on the boat or ashore. If you are considering giving some of your time as an RNLI crew member, a visit on Saturday would give prospective crew a special insight.
Apart from the primary task of crewing and launching the lifeboat in response to requests for assistance, volunteers also offer support in admistration, fund raising, water safety education and station visits.
"It is always great to welcome the public to the station. They get to see the environment where we train and operate and RNLI volunteers are delighted to have the opportunity to share life saving tips and advice with our guests," said Paul Kelly, Lough Ree RNLI Station Visits Officer.
This week the Lough Ree RNLI Facebook Page will feature volunteer videos outlining the many and varied roles at the station. Full details of crew opportunities can be found on the RNLI website.
Lough Ree RNLI is always on call to repond to calls for assistance on the water, in the event of an emergency call 112 or 999 and ask for the Coast Guard.
