'Boxer' calls on Westmeath County Council to provide parking meter card payment option
Local Minister of State, Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran has called on Westmeath County Council to introduce a parking meter card payment option for all motorists, saying the absence of this payment mechanism was "outdated and inconvenient".
“This is an issue I raised when I was on the council last year and, while I believe it is very important that we retain the option of cash at all times, I also believe that the council should consider changing the parking meters to also accommodate card payments," Minister Moran said.
“The absence of card payment options at parking meters is outdated and inconvenient. Many people no longer carry cash, and forcing them to scramble for coins creates unnecessary hassle and frustration. I have seen this at first hand myself in Athlone and in Mullingar.
“Other towns around the country have adapted their parking meters to accommodate both cards and cash and I believe Westmeath County Council should now do the same."
The Minister urged the local authority to modernise the existing parking systems by introducing card and contactless payment methods while also retaining the option of paying by coins.
"This simple change will improve accessibility, reduce stress for motorists, and align with the way a lot of people make transactions in everyday life today.
“A seamless, cash-free experience benefits everyone - whether it's commuters, visitors, or businesses. It’s time to embrace progress and ensure parking meters serve the needs of modern society and offer both options - cards and cash,” the Independent Minister of State said.
