Athlone Town women drawn against Cardiff City in Champions League

The Athlone Town women's team will face Cardiff City in their first-ever UEFA Champions League fixture.

The draw for the first qualifying round of the new-look women's Champions League took place shortly after 11am, Irish time, today (Wednesday).

Having won the league for the first time last year, Athlone Town were in the pot as an unseeded team.

The first and second qualifying rounds of the competition are to take the form of mini-tournaments, with semi-finals and a final being played as single-leg ties hosted by one of the participating clubs.

Athlone were drawn against Cardiff City - and, as the seeded club, Cardiff will be the designated home team.

The winner of that game will then face ŽNK Agram of Croatia. As the club with the highest coefficient in the three-team group, ŽNK Agram are seeded directly to the final and designated as the home team in that tie.

The semi-final fixture, between Cardiff City and Athlone Town, is set to be played on Wednesday, July 30, with the final then scheduled for Sunday, August 3.
