Ellen McLoughlin and Mount Temple Star.

Rising star Ellen to compete in famed Dublin Horse Show

The equestrian community in the Athlone area is buzzing with pride following Ellen McLoughlin’s spectacular victory in the Junior Equitation qualifier at Ard Chuain Equestrian Centre in Ballina, Co. Mayo on Sunday last.

Displaying exceptional skill and poise, McLoughlin (12) delivered a near-perfect performance aboard her ten-year-old mare, Mount Temple Star, earning her a coveted spot at the prestigious RDS Dublin Horse Show, set to take place from August 6th to 10th.

Junior Equitation is a discipline that places paramount importance on the rider’s style, technique, and overall harmony with their horse over a challenging course of showjumping fences. Judges scrutinise every aspect of the rider’s performance, from their position on the flat between jumps to their technique and effectiveness in using aids while navigating the obstacles.

Ardnagrath NS pupil Ellen McLoughlin said: “This is a dream come through. I still cant believe it! I’m so grateful to everyone who has helped me prepare for this and delighted with Star. She is the best.”

The deep roots of Ellen’s equestrian passion are clearly a family affair. Her mother, Colette Gaffey, operates Essentially Equestrian, a well-known equestrian retail outlet, while her aunt, Claire Gaffey, runs the successful Athlone Equestrian Centre. This strong family connection to the equine world undoubtedly plays a significant role in Ellen’s developing a passion for the sport.

This qualifier at Ard Chuain was one of only four held across Ireland, with the top four riders from each securing their golden ticket to the RDS. McLoughlin’s exceptional performance ensures she will represent Athlone on the national stage, competing against the finest junior riders from across the country at one of Ireland’s most celebrated equestrian events.

All eyes will now be on Ellen and Mount Temple Star as they prepare to showcase their skills at the Dublin Horse Show. Her victory is not only a personal triumph but also a source of great inspiration for aspiring young riders throughout the midlands.
