Síofra aims to help build bright future in Guatemala

Athlone native Síofra McMahon is preparing for the trip of a lifetime as she sets out to spend her summer building a therapy space for a disadvantaged community in Guatemala.

The 21-year-old recently completed her 3rd year studying for a Bachelor in Architecture at ATU Sligo, and spent her teen years in school in Our Lady's Bower in Athlone.

She is the daughter of Colaiste Chiaráin teacher Evelyn O'Sullivan and John McMahon.

Heading off in July, Síofra is completing her volunteering journey with socially-driven architectural practice Caulkin Studio.

"The team I’ll be joining is made up of young volunteers from different backgrounds, all coming together to help build a new therapy space for a school that works with children who have experienced trauma, learning difficulties, or social challenges. Guatemala is a beautiful country with a rich culture, but many communities face challenges with access to education, healthcare, and safe facilities.

Síofra is hosting a market in aid of her trip.

"The school we’ll be working with plays a vital role in supporting children and families in the area. The therapy space we’re helping to build will provide a quiet, dedicated area where children can receive emotional and psychological support, something that can make a real difference to their development and well-being."

The Athlone native architecture student is particularly excited to gain hands on experience in her field of study, and to make an impact on a disadvantaged community.

"It’s a chance to use my skills in a meaningful way while learning more about sustainable and community-based building practices. It’s also an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of how design and infrastructure can impact lives far beyond the classroom. I have the opportunity to give back, grow personally and professionally, and be part of something truly life-changing. Volunteering abroad is something I’ve always wanted to do, and I feel really lucky to be part of this."

Síofra is fully self-funding her volunteering trip with the support of her local community. She has raised a total of €820 of her €2,000 goal from some 27 donations on her GoFundMe page.

"I’ve been blown away by the support so far," she said. "It’s a big challenge, but I know it’s going to be an incredibly rewarding experience."
