Council in Westmeath tenders for CCTV cameras to catch litter louts

Westmeath County Council has launched a procurement process for new CCTV cameras at dumping blackspots in the county.

The local authority recently went to tender for the supply and installation of "a minimum of four" CCTV cameras at various locations.

The tender documents state that the estimated value of the CCTV contract is €65,000, excluding VAT, and that the cameras were being put in place to help "investigate and prosecute dumping".

Westmeath County Council indicated that the provider of the cameras would also be engaged in "the recording, monitoring and processing of data" resulting from their use.

The provider would also be responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the cameras, and the "the relocation and reinstallation of any or all four CCTV cameras to different sites" at the council's request.

When cameras are moved from one location to another, they are to be replaced with "like-for-like dummy cameras" to give the impression that they are still present and functioning.

The tendering process for the cameras was first advertised on June 16, and the closing date for contractors to apply is this Friday, July 4, at 4pm.

If and when a successful contractor is appointed, the contract is due to remain in place for a period of two years.
