Free hot meal scheme launches in Coosan NS
Students of Coosan NS recently received their first free hot meals through a newly-funded government programme, delivered by Ireland’s leading school lunch provider, The Lunch Bag.
Coosan NS and the company have a rich history, stretching back to 2019 when The Lunch Bag began in the school, feeding 187 children on its first day of operation. Since then, the company has expanded to feeding over 100,000 kids a day and employing over 800 people nationwide.
While the service in Coosan initially began as a private, paid option for parents, the introduction of government-funded meals means all students can now enjoy nutritious hot lunches for free.
Managing Director and Athlone resident Ger Killian said: “We are delighted to now be supporting Coosan with hot school meals. The school, parents and children have always been important to us at The Lunch Bag, having given us a platform to launch our now very successful business. School meals are being rolled out nationwide not just to cater for children, but to improve attendance, academic performance and achievement across all schools, in addition to boosting immunity and cognitive development.”
Principal Stephen Cunningham also welcomed the development: “We’re thrilled to take this next step in our journey with The Lunch Bag. Our long-standing relationship is something we’re incredibly proud of, and we’re excited to begin this new chapter. We have every confidence that The Lunch Bag is the right partner for our school. Their commitment to quality and care has always set them apart.”
Every pupil at Coosan can now log onto The Lunch Bag app and choose from over 15 hot meals daily, all designed to cater for a wide range of dietary needs, including allergies, intolerances, and religious or ethical preferences.
The hot meals scheme has already been rolled out in most schools across Athlone and Westmeath, with The Lunch Bag continuing to play a central role in its success. The company is also innovating to reach schools without the space for ovens. Their new hot drop model delivers meals directly from local GAA clubs, making nutritious meals more accessible without compromising on quality or safety.
“We’re incredibly excited about our partnership with the GAA,” Ms Killian added. “It’s a fantastic way to ensure no school is left behind, while also strengthening links with the local community.”
