Clarke calls post office closures 'shocking'
In ten years, over 200 post offices have closed across the country, according to figures received by David Cullinane TD in response to a Parliamentary Question. This includes six in Westmeath.
TD for Longford-Westmeath Sorca Clarke has called it "shocking", with shutdowns in the midlands adding to the 257 post office closures across the country.
Deputy Clarke said: “The local post office plays a vital role in Irish life, providing financial services, access to the social welfare system, communications infrastructure, and community supports.
In many areas, they are the only visible expression of the state.
“They are public services, not just private enterprises and must be supported as such, as they foster social inclusion, connection and participation, especially for older people.
Deputy Clarke addresses concerns about the recent closures, saying: “There is widespread concern that the current contract terms are simply not fit for purpose.
“They are not attracting new tenants to take over post office services when long-serving postmasters retire.
“It's time for action; the government cannot continue to ignore the crisis in our post office network. They need to listen to postmasters and the community they serve."
Deputy Clarke outlines what is needed from the government: “What's needed now is targeted, strategic investment and a new vision that puts public services and community needs first,” she concluded.
