Hannon's Hotel in Roscommon will host a workshop on the Roscommon Field Names Project this coming Wednesday.

Upcoming workshop on Roscommon field names project

An initiative in Roscommon which aims to help preserve historic field names in the county, is set to continue at a workshop being held on Wednesday next (July 16).

The Heritage Council-funded Roscommon Field Names Project has been underway since last year and "is all about preserving the old field names that reflect the heritage, stories, and local knowledge embedded in our townlands and fields".

These names "are an important part of our community history" and the process of recording them will also help contribute to the national placenames archive at logainm.ie

This year, the project will work with three community organisations – one in each Municipal District in Roscommon – as well as a possible fourth group of interested individuals.

Each participating group will receive support materials and guides, and will be guided step-by-step on how to collect and prepare field name data.

Next Wednesday's workshop will get underway at 10am in Hannon's Hotel, Roscommon.

The organisers said it will "introduce the project and how it builds on last year's work" and will "explore the importance of field names for local and national heritage".

The event is free, but booking is required.
