Athlone Town's Emma Mooney became the second youngest goalscorer in the Women's Premier Division at the weekend when she netted twice in the win over Wexford Youths

Mooney's magic creates history as Athlone Town women stay in pole position

A 2-0 win over Wexford Youths in Ferrycarrig Park on Saturday cemented the Athlone Town women's senior team's place at the top of the Premier Division but the fixture also proved significant for the game's only goalscorer.

At the age of 15 years, nine months and 22 days, Emma Mooney became the second youngest player to score in the Women's Premier Division, while also becoming the youngest player to score a brace in a top flight fixture.

Coupled with Shelbourne's loss to Bohemians, it was a significant weekend in the team's season as Colin Fortune's charges moved four points clear of the team from the capital.

With 11 games played to date in the league, Athlone Town have yet to taste defeat winning 10 and drawing one of their contests.

Athlone Town will aim to maintain their unbeaten league start when they host Galway United on Saturday evening, kick off 7.30pm.

They have also progressed to the quarter-final stage of this year's FAI Cup where they will play Peamount on August 16.
