Stop/Go system considered for “dangerous” Halls Bridge

The dangers of Halls Bridge in Athlone has been raised at the latest meeting of the Athlone-Moate Municipal District.

The motion was raised by Cllr John Gibbons who asked that the District “investigate and install a “shuttle system” traffic light control" at Halls Bridge to allow for the safe passage of buses and large vehicles to cross the bridge.

"This is a very busy crossing and safety of other road users would be enhanced with the shuttle system in place.”

In a written response, the council executive said: “The District notes the competing demands of pedestrians, buses and traffic at Halls Bridge.

The concern will be investigated and a possible enhancement to the present traffic flow arrangement will be considered.”

There was universal agreement within the council chamber, with Cllr Gibbons receiving the support of his fellow council members.

Cllr Paul Hogan said: “It's an area that receives a lot of traffic - cyclists, pedestrians, vehicular traffic with both cars and buses. You can't see what's coming from the other side, it's a very steep bridge.

"It is dangerous. Maybe we should introduce a stop/go system, but there will be works needed on it.”

District Engineer Willie Ryan agreed with the dangers of the bridge.

In response he said: “It can be very busy, it's tight, and sometimes traffic has to reverse back from the bridge to allow other traffic to pass. We will make an appraisal.”
