Long serving Roscommon footballer retires from county scene
Roscommon attacker Donie Smith has officially announced his retirement from inter-county football.
The Boyle man made his senior debut for Roscommon in the 2012 Championship against Tyrone and went on to make 133 appearances in the primrose and blue.
Over the course of a distinguished career, Donie won two Connacht SFC medals (2017, 2019), four National Football League Division 2 titles (2015, 2018, 2020, 2022) and one NFL Division 3 title (2014).
Known for his commitment to the Roscommon jersey, Donie had the honour of captaining the senior team in 2022 and finished his career with an impressive scoring record of 8 goals and 273 points.
Donie's brother Enda Smith is Roscommon's most recent All Star recipient.
Speaking on Donie’s retirement, Roscommon GAA chairperson Brian Carroll said: "On behalf of everyone in Roscommon GAA, I want to thank Donie for his dedication and commitment to the Roscommon jersey over the past 13 years. He always wore the primrose and blue with great honesty and pride. Donie’s scoring tally of 8-273 shows the consistent level of high performance that Donie gave while on the pitch.
"We wish Donie, Laura and Sadie all the very best for the future and a long, happy and healthy life,” Carroll added.
