Tubberclair GAA to celebrate golden era with Meath legend as special guest
Tubberclair GAA proudly announces the club’s upcoming ‘50 40’ celebration - a commemorative event marking a golden era of football success in the club’s history.
Taking place on Saturday, September 13 at Glasson Lakehouse Hotel, this special evening will celebrate 50 years since the club’s Minor Football Championship in 1975 and 40 years since the club’s historic Senior Championship win in 1985.
Tubberclair won their sole Westmeath senior football title in 1985, defeating St Malachy's in the final, ten years after the minor success. Next month's event will also honour a number of other successful Tubberclair teams.
The celebration will honour the iconic group of players that laid the foundation for Tubberclair’s proud football tradition: 1975 Minor football champions, 1976 Minor champions, 1977 Under-21 champions, 1978 Junior B champions, 1978 Junior champions, 1979 Intermediate champions and 1985 Senior champions.
Adding to the occasion, Colm O’Rourke, two-time All-Ireland winner with Meath and one of Gaelic football’s most recognised voices, will be special guest on the night. A legendary figure on and off the field, O’Rourke brings with him a rich legacy as a multiple All-Star and as a respected pundit and columnist.
The night will also feature a tribute to the Tubberclair Junior Football Champions of 1967, who made history in what remains the longest championship campaign in Westmeath GAA history. That remarkable title, sealed after three replays and 270 minutes of football, is the stuff of folklore, with one dramatic replay ending in a standoff over a disputed free.
This golden era of Tubberclair football began with youthful ambition in 1975 and peaked with the club’s first ever Senior Championship in 1985 — a defining moment that continues to inspire today.
Now, with a new generation of talent that has already claimed two minor titles in the past three years, Tubberclair GAA stands on the brink of another bright chapter.
The '5040' celebration event is open to all – club members past and present, neighbouring parishes, and anyone with an interest in the GAA. It promises to be a night of stories, memories, and pride in a club whose journey has helped shape the identity of a whole community.
Music will be provided on the celebration evening by local musicians. Tickets (priced at €30) are available from members of the Tubberclair GAA Club Event Committee - John Parker, Eamon Fagan, Peter Elliott, Jim Byrne and Gerry Walker.
