Free admission for under-18s to OPW heritage sites this month
Heritage sites operated by the Office of Public Works (OPW) in the Midlands and nationwide will be offering free admission to visitors under the age of 18 throughout the month of August.
Sites in the Midlands where the free admission for Under-18s is due to come into effect include Clonmacnoise, and the Corlea Trackway Visitor Centre, home to Europe’s largest known prehistoric wooden road, near Kenagh in Longford.
The OPW said the pilot initiative "aims to encourage families and young people to engage with Ireland’s heritage over the summer in a budget-friendly and accessible way".
It added that the heritage sites which it manages serve as invaluable educational resources, helping to foster a deeper understanding of the past across all generations.
Announcing the scheme, Minister of State with responsibility for the OPW, Kevin 'Boxer' Moran, said: “I'm very proud to launch this new pilot scheme, which will give young people across the Midlands and the rest of Ireland a chance to explore our heritage for free this August.
“Whether it’s a day out at Fore Abbey, Clonmacnoise, or the Corlea Trackway, these are places that bring history to life.
“They also offer families a low-cost way to enjoy quality time together during the summer break.
"We are fortunate to have such incredible castles, monuments and historic properties across the country that are invaluable educational resources.
"I encourage all our young people to get out and explore their local heritage this summer. Our sites are the perfect backdrop to meet friends, explore a fascinating site, and have a treat at the local café," said the Minister from Athlone.
The free U18 scheme applies to all fee-paying OPW heritage sites — with the exception of Kilmainham Gaol and Brú na Bóinne — and runs until August 31. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
