Mr. Gary Kenny, the new Principal of Mercy Secondary School in Ballymahon.

New principal for Ballymahon's Mercy Secondary School

A new appointment has been made for Ballymahon's Mercy Secondary School, as the school welcomed their new principal, Mr. Gary Kenny.

The schools Board of Management announced the appointment in August 1, ahead of the commencement of the new school year.

Mr. Kenny began his teaching career at Moyle Park College in Clondalkin, where he taught for nine and a half years before joining the staff of Mercy Ballymahon as an excellent teacher of History and Geography in February 2016.

He was appointed Deputy Principal in September 2017, a role he has fulfilled with great energy, dedication and care over the past eight years.

"Mr. Kenny is deeply committed to all aspects of school life and is especially passionate about the holistic development of every student," the statement by the Board of Management read.

"A native of Newtowncashel, he values the school’s strong ties with the local community and is enthusiastic about continuing to strengthen these connections. We wish Mr. Kenny every success as he begins his leadership journey as Principal of our school."

It comes as his predecessor, Ms. Josephine Donohue, announced her retirement from her post in May last, effective from August 31, after 33 years of dedicated service to the Ballymahon school.

Throughout her time in Mercy Secondary School, Ms. Donohue served as a Home Economics and Religion teacher, Deputy Principal, and for the past 18 years, as Principal.

Thanking her for her impact on the school and the wider community, the Board of Management wrote: "Throughout her tenure, Josephine has led with vision, care, and an unwavering commitment to the wellbeing and success of our students and staff.

"Her leadership has seen the school grow in excellence and inclusivity, including the establishment of four Special ASD classes and the expansion of extracurricular and academic programs.

"The Board of Management, along with the entire school community, is deeply grateful for Josephine’s remarkable dedication and the lasting impact she has made.

"While we are saddened to see her step down, we celebrate her incredible legacy and wish her every happiness as she embarks on this well-deserved next chapter."
