New Ballinasloe exhibition highlights art's role in health and recovery

A deeply moving new art exhibition, entitled 'Echoes of Recovery', was officially launched on Friday, August 8, at Ballinasloe Library by the Cathaoirleach of Galway County Council, Cllr David Collins.

The exhibition showcases a powerful collection of artworks created through a series of participatory art workshops held in hospital and community settings across Galway County.

The exhibition is part of the 'Mending HeArts Project', an initiative that brings professional artists into healthcare and community settings to support people recovering from cardiovascular disease and stroke.

Workshops took place in Portiuncula University Hospital, Ballinasloe Library, and Loughrea Family and Community Resource Centre, offering participants the opportunity to explore painting, printmaking, collage, and mixed media in a relaxed and supportive environment.

Speaking at the launch, Cllr Collins praised the initiative, saying it "highlights the vital role the arts can play in supporting health and wellbeing, not just in hospitals but across our towns and villages".

"It is inspiring to see what can happen when we invest in people and their stories. It is a powerful example of how creativity can bring people together and strengthen our communities."

'Echoes of Recovery' celebrates the emotional journeys of those living with illness, offering a glimpse into personal stories of vulnerability, strength, and recovery. It showcases how the integration of creative practices in healthcare can enhance emotional wellbeing and community connection.

Participant Deirdre Muldoon, who took part in one of the workshops, said: "I did art in school and always wanted to go back.

"I loved the workshops, I really enjoyed the guidance from the artist and being let to be free to do our own creations. I learned to be myself and not to be afraid."

Funded by Creative Ireland, the Mending HeArts project is delivered in partnership by Saolta Arts, HSE West and North West, Galway City Council, Galway County Council, Croí the Heart and Stroke Charity, and Healthy Ireland.
