Ballymore farmwalk to explore regenerative market gardening opportunities
A Ballymore farmer is to host a a farm walk to explore regenerative and biological market gardening in action.
The walk will take place at Kate Egan's vibrant nine-acre farm and community growing project on August 23.
Kate is a passionate steward of the land, whose farm has evolved from a traditional market garden supplying local restaurants and shops into a thriving community hub.
Since launching the Grow Together project in 2024, Kate has brought people together to share knowledge, responsibility, and the joy of growing fresh food on her half-acre garden plot.
Kate’s expert approach combines regenerative practices with biological market gardening techniques to nurture soil health for long-lasting fertility and create resilient food systems.
No chemical inputs are used anywhere on the farm. This walk will give you an overview on how to replace these with biological and regenerative methods. She also has a mature forest garden, designed using permaculture principles, which focuses on using perennial and low-labour intensive plants to produce food.
Kate's farm contains diverse habitats including an esker ridge, ancient hedgerows with old ash trees, woodland with wild cherry, crab apple, honeysuckle, and rich wildflower meadows that support pollinators and wildlife year-round. Over the years, Kate has planted hundreds of native trees and actively manages wildflower meadows for pollinators. On her farm walk, there will be an opportunity to see her wildlife pond, learn about how to go about digging your own and the huge benefits it will bring to you and your land.
This farm walk is ideal for anyone interested in sustainable smallholding practices that work with nature to build climate resilience and strengthen local food communities. Attendees will gain practical insights into regenerative growing methods, enhancing land for nature, and how farming can be a powerful force for environmental stewardship.
The walk takes place at 2pm on Saturday, August 23.
