Athlone Town set for Scotland trip in Women's Europa Cup

Athlone Town have been drawn against Glasgow City in the first qualifying round of the UEFA Women's Europa Cup.

The draw for the inaugural staging of the Europa Cup took place in Nyon, Switzerland a short time ago.

The first leg is due to be played on September 10/11, with the second leg on September 17/18.

At the time of wiring, the exact dates of the Athlone Town vs Glasgow City fixtures and which team would be at home first had yet to be confirmed.

Considering the relatively short journey to Glasgow and the large Irish community in the Scottish city, the draw will be welcomed by Athlone fans who are considering making the trip to support their team.

After the rather bizarre and complicated format used by UEFA for the qualifying rounds of the Champions League, things are thankfully more straightforward in the Europa Cup with teams battling it out over two legs, home and away.

Athlone booked their place in the Europa Cup with a 2-0 win over Serbian champions Red Star Belgrade (officially Crvena Zvedza) in a match hosted by FC Twente in the Netherlands yesterday. Kelly Brady and Róisín Molloy scored the goals for Colin Fortune's side.

Glasgow City were edged out by Hibernian for the Scottish Women's Premier League title in the 2024-2025 season. Glasgow actually finished ahead of Hibernian after the initial programme of games, but it was Hibs who came out on top in the 'championship round' involving the top six.
