Free public transport initiative to benefit Westmeath families

Local public representatives have welcomed the launch of a new TFI Child Leap Card, offering free travel to children aged 5 to 8 across all Transport for Ireland (TFI) services.

The initiative, part of the Government’s Budget 2025 package, builds on existing free travel for under-5s and is expected to benefit families in Athlone where Leap Cards are already widely used on local bus routes.

Minister of State, Kevin 'Boxer' Moran said the announcement was a "major boost" to public transport access for Athlone families.

“This is a great day for Athlone families. Free travel for children under 9 will make everyday life easier, whether it’s the school run, a trip to the shops, or visiting grandparents. It’s a practical measure that supports parents and encourages children to see public transport as a normal part of growing up.

“Parents managing school runs or weekend outings will now feel the benefit of free travel for young children,” Minister Moran said.

Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment, Peter Burke, said the roll-out of the new TFI Child Leap Card, will allow free travel for local children up to their ninth birthday on all TFI services, including Bus Éireann, Iarnród Éireann, Local Link and Dublin commuter routes.

“This measure will make a real difference when it comes to school runs, weekend trips into town, or visits to relatives. Whether families live in Athlone, Mullingar, Kinnegad, or our rural villages, they can now make use of public transport free of charge for their younger children," Deputy Burke said.

Meanwhile, Fianna Fáil Minister of State Robert Troy, said the public transport initiative was a "positive development for families in County Westmeath".

“This initiative is about more than cost savings. It encourages the use of public transport from an early age, helping to build sustainable travel habits and reduce emissions.

“Families in both urban and rural areas will benefit, and I believe this will be warmly welcomed across County Westmeath," Minister Troy said.
