Athlone woman reaches dream target weight
In every community, there are stories of quiet determination that deserve to be celebrated – stories that remind us of the power of perseverance and the strength that comes from believing in ourselves.
One such story involves local woman Alice Gilligan, who has achieved a remarkable milestone: losing an incredible four and a half stone and reaching her dream target weight.
Alice’s journey was not straightforward. Like many who embark on a weight-loss path, she had tried before – joining Slimming World on and off, losing a pound here and there, but never quite finding the spark she needed to carry her all the way.
What was missing, she now says, was belief. “I never truly believed I could do it,” Alice admits. That belief – the mindset and behaviour change – finally came with the unwavering encouragement of her Slimming World group.
Having recently retired, Alice is relishing the energy, confidence, and joy her transformation has brought. “I feel like a new woman,” she says. Friends and neighbours notice the spring in her step, the positivity in her outlook, and the happiness that radiates from her.
Her consultant Sinead, who supported Alice throughout her journey, could not be prouder:
“Alice is an inspiration to everyone in group. She’s proof that once you start believing in yourself, there’s no limit to what you can achieve. I’ve seen her confidence grow week by week, and now she’s reached her dream target weight – I couldn’t be prouder of her.”
Consultants across Athlone agree that belief is often the turning point. Pauline, who runs a local Slimming World group, says:
“So many members come to us doubting whether they’ll ever reach their goals. But the moment they shift their mindset and believe they can, the changes in behaviour naturally follow – and that’s when the magic happens.”
Carol, another local consultant, echoes this:
“It’s not just about losing weight – it’s about gaining confidence, energy, and self-belief. Once members see that they really can do it, they go on to achieve their dream target weights, just like Alice.”
Sharleen adds: “The support of the group is so important. We cheer each other on, celebrate the wins, and lift each other up after the tough weeks. That’s what makes the difference – knowing you’re not alone, and that belief spreads through the group.”
Alongside the support, the Slimming World plan itself is a big part of the success.
The plan is built around normal, everyday foods the whole family can enjoy – pasta, potatoes, rice, lean meats, fruit and veg – and no food is ever completely off-limits. It’s a sustainable, balanced way of eating that fits into real life, making it possible to enjoy food without guilt while still seeing fantastic results.
Alice’s story has even inspired her daughter, Susan, to join her on the journey. Motivated by her mother’s transformation, Susan not only began her own Slimming World journey but has taken it one step further.
She has now trained as a consultant herself and will be opening a brand-new Slimming World group in Ballinasloe soon – ready to help others achieve their dream weights, just like her mum.
