The Westmeath Independent Community and Sports Awards 2025, in partnership with Westmeath County Council, were officially launched at a ceremony in the Shamrock Lodge Hotel, attended by representatives of the newspaper, sponsors and the hotel.
The awards are designed to acknowledge the work done by individuals, groups and sporting clubs in our community, and everyone is invited to nominate those they think are deserving.
The other sponsors for this year's awards ceremony are Byrne Carolan Cinningham LLP Solicitors, DPD, West-Midlands Credit Union and Shamrock Lodge Hotel, representatives from each business present at the event launch.
The launch was addressed by Westmeath Independent editor Tadhg Carey, who spoke of the paper's connection with the community, the awards reflecting that spirit.
"In terms of community, it is what the Westmeath Independent is all about.
Our job as journalists is to reflect and give a voice to our community.
"The Westmeath Independent Community & Sports Awards follow on from the community ethos and there is no better way to acknowledge our volunteers, our unsung heroes and their achievements. These are the people who make a difference in our lives," Tadhg said.
There are four awards in the community category.
These are the social inclusion award; group of the year; volunteer of the year and unsung hero. The sports category also has four awards, namely young sports star of the year; outstanding achievement of the year; hall of fame and team of the year. An overall winner in each of the community and sport categories will be also be chosen.

The awards ceremony will take place at the Shamrock Lodge Hotel on Thursday, November 20.
