Fr John to move on after seven years in Athlone's St Mary's parish
A priest who has been based in Athlone's St Mary's parish for the last seven years, Fr John Eze, will be taking up a new role in Cavan later this week.
The St Mary's parish bulletin said Fr John was being transferred by Bishop Paul Connell to the parish of Ballymachugh, in Cavan, with effect from this Saturday, October 25.
The administrator of St Mary's Parish in Athlone, Fr Pat Murphy, paid tribute to the "wonderful service" given by Fr John during his years in the town.
"I want to express my deep gratitude to John for his wonderful service to the people of St Mary’s Parish over the last seven years," wrote Fr Pat Murphy in the bulletin.
"Thank you, John, for giving so generously of your gifts and sharing your faith with us throughout these years."
Fr John also wrote "a few words of appreciation" to parishioners, describing his time at St Mary's as "a great blessing". He came to the parish in August 2018, replacing Fr Turlough Baxter.
"I am deeply grateful to my brother priests for their fraternal support, guidance, and friendship," wrote Fr John in the bulletin.
"To all the parishioners - thank you for your care, generosity, and encouragement throughout these years. Your kindness and cooperation have made my ministry both joyful and fulfilling.
"While I move on to serve in another parish, I will always carry fond memories of my time here in St Mary's and the many wonderful people who have touched my life. Please keep me in your prayers, as I will continue to remember you all in mine."
Fr John will celebrate his final Mass in the parish at St Mary's Church this Wednesday (October 22) at 9.30am. After the Mass there will be light refreshments in the parish meeting rooms. All are welcome.
Fr Frank Phiri, from Zambia, has been appointed by Bishop Paul Connell to St Mary's parish.
"We extend a warm welcome to him and trust that he will be very much at home in his new parish," said Fr Pat Murphy.
