Midlands athlete continues to add to her international medal haul

Midlands athlete Eileen Kenny continues to add to her medal haul with a number of impressive performances at the European Masters Athletics Championships in Madeira.

The Athlone resident was one of 134 Irish Master athletes who competed at the athletics championships and finished on the podium in four race categories.

A club member of Tullamore Harriers, Eileen claimed a gold medal in the individual 6KM cross country run complementing this achievement with a silver medal in the team category of the race.

Two further silver medals were added to her medal collection in the individual and team race categories of the 10km road race.

Eileen completed her medal haul winning a bronze medal in the 5KM race.

In a social media post acknowledging her international achievements, Tullamore Harriers described Eileen as "a source of inspiration".

"A seasoned international competitor, Eileen has represented Ireland on numerous occasions, winning gold medals at both European and World Championship events.

"Her achievements are a source of inspiration, showing just what can be accomplished at any age.

"In athletics, we cannot hide our age and at 75 years of age, Eileen has more than plenty to be proud of - clocking times that many people, half her age could only dream of.

"Eileen currently holds the Irish O70s record in outdoor track for 800m, 3000m and 5000m. She also holds the record in her age category in the 5km (22.20), 10km (45.28) and has run a best half marathon time of 1.43:33.

"To cap that, she also holds the O70s 4 x 800m and the O75 4 x 800m relay world record.

"What a phenomenal week for such an inspirational lady. Eileen, you continue to raise the bar for us all".
