The late Sister Stanislaus Kennedy.

Athlone bishop pays warm tribute to Sister Stan

The Bishop of Kerry, Athlone native Ray Browne, has paid a warm tribute to the much-loved Sister Stanislaus Kennedy who died this morning (Monday) at the age of 86.

Affectionately known as 'Sister Stan', she lived a life characterised by devotion and service to the poor and marginalised.

Bishop Ray Browne, originally from Magazine Road in Athlone, noted that Sr Stan was from Lispole, Dingle, in Kerry, and that the people of the diocese were rightly proud of her and of all the organisations she founded in her lifetime.

"On behalf of the Diocese of Kerry, I wish to express sympathy to all who mourn the death of Sister Stanislaus Kennedy, may she rest in peace," said Bishop Browne.

"Throughout her more than sixty years as a Religious Sister of Charity, the needs of people living in poverty in Ireland was always her greatest concern.

"Her faith led her to see, responding to the words of Jesus, ‘Truly I tell you, as long as you did it to one of these the least of my brethren, you did it to me’ (Mt 25:40), as her lifelong vocation.

"Today, and for all time, may many Irish people of all ages continue to be inspired to walk in Sister Stan’s footsteps out of love for Jesus Christ," he added.
