Book of condolence opens in civic centre for former Athlone Mayor

A book of condolences has been opened at Athlone Civic Centre for those wishing to pay respects to the former local councillor and town Mayor Egbert Moran, who died last Thursday.

The funeral Mass of Mr Moran was attended by a huge crowd at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in Coosan today.

Prior to the start of the service, guards of honour were formed by representatives of Buccaneers Rugby Club and Westmeath County Council.

A married father of three, Egbert Moran served as a Fianna Fáil councillor for fourteen years, between 1995 and 2009, becoming both Cathaoirleach of Westmeath County Council and Mayor of Athlone Town Council, on two occasions, during that time.

Announcing the opening of the book of condolence, Westmeath County Council said it was being made available in Athlone Civic Centre for any members of the public who wish to call in to express their sympathies to Egbert’s family at this time.

The book of condolence will be open for the remainder of this week, until Friday, November 7.
