Waesch agrees contract extension with Athlone Town women

Prominent Athlone Town women's first team central midfielder Hannah Waesch has signed a one-year contract extension with the club.

The Texan-born player joined the club in March of this year and played a pivotal role as Athlone Town made history securing both Women's Premier Division and FAI Cup honours.

Waesch is one of two Athlone Town nominees for the PFA Ireland Women's 'Player of the Year'. Striker, Kelly Brady, who netted 19 league goals during the season, has also been nominated for the award.

Both players, along with teammates Megan Plaschko, Kayleigh Shine and Madison Gibson, were also named in the PFAI Women's Premier Division 'Team of the Year' .

Waesch's contract extension is further positive news for the club who also confirmed in recent days that Shine, Gibson and Kerryanne Brown had opted to extend their playing careers with Athlone Town.

Meanwhile, an enticing local derby is in prospect for Athlone Town men's first team having been drawn alongside CCFL Senior Division champions, St Peter's in the group phase of LFA Senior Cup.

Athlone have been placed in Group A where they will play the McCarthy Park club, current Leinster Senior cup holders Dundalk and Shelbourne.

St Peter's advanced to the group stage of the competition courtesy of their second round defeat of Kilkenny club Freebooters last Sunday.

League of Ireland clubs from the province enter the competition at the third round stage, with 16 teams, divided into four groups, contesting for knockout phase berths. The top two teams in each group advance to the quarter-finals of the competition.

As of yet no fixture dates have been confirmed for what is deemed to be the oldest association football cup competition in the country.
