Carrickobrien resident James Cleary claimed pony showjumping gold for Ireland at an international equestrian event in Cheshire at the weekend

Pony showjumping gold for Athlone teenager

The showjumping prowess of Carrickobrien resident James Cleary was enhanced when he claimed a gold medal at an international showjumping event in South View Competition & Training Centre, Cheshire, at the weekend.

Competing in the individual category of the English Home Pony competition, such was the performance standard of the Moate Community School student that he qualified for international selection in the team event.

James, who is the son of Paul and Joan Cleary, was an integral member of the Ireland team in the 148cm pony class, and aboard the Jim Derwin Equestrian pony 'Milchem Original', he and his three colleagues, Ruben Foley, Sam Widger and Ella Cash achieved prime podium position with their gold star performance.

Speaking to the Westmeath Independent, James' grandfather, well known local horse trainer, Tom Cleary, said James had shown a passion for showjumping from the age of three.

"James started out with the Auburn riding school at the age of three and soon developed a love for the sport.

"He has participated in numerous equestrian events, but the win at the weekend is his biggest success to date," Tom said.

James, who also rides horses for Jim Derwin Equestrian, and was aboard the has two further showjumping meets, in Mullingar and Cavan, prior to Christmas, where he will be hoping to continue his successful form.
