No ramps for 'rural' Garnafeile road in Athlone

No ramps will be installed on the Garnafeile road in Athlone due to its rural status, the latest meeting of Athlone Moate Municipal District was told.

Cllr John Gibbons asked for an update on the traffic measure being put in place at Garnafeile road.

In a written response, the council executive said that restoration works were undertaken on a section of this road earlier this year, and that additional safety works were due to begin near Coosan NS in the coming weeks.

"The rural 60kmph speed limit was introduced earlier in 2025 and the enforcement of speed limits is a matter for An Garda Siochana," the response read.

"As the road has a rural designation, the provision of vertical measures ie. Ramps is not considered an appropriate measure."

It was also agreed that a letter outlining the speed concern can issue to An Garda Siochana.
