Safety concerns voiced over Cova roundabout

A local councillor has called for the introduction of speed reduction measures on the approach road to the roundabout at The Cova, Arcadia.

Addressing members at the monthly meeting of Athlone-Moate Municipal District, Cllr Paul Hogan said that he had been notified of some "minor collisions" and "near misses" at the roundabout, particular on the "approaching the junction from the Slí An Aifrinn/Athlone GAA direction".

"Some motorists drive straight through the roundabout when turning left off the Ballymahon Road. I have highlighted this matter previously. Maybe, it is the topography of the road at that location which is the main cause for concern," Cllr Hogan said.

In response, District Engineer Willie Ryan said he was unaware of any speeding being in evidence at the location.

"The District will engage with Cllr Hogan in the coming weeks to understand the specific concerns at the roundabout. Thereafter, if necessary, the District will engage with the TII’s Motorway Maintenance and Renewals Contracts (MMaRC), should any works be necessary at the location," Mr Ryan said.
