Maryland's Martin calls time on intercounty career
Westmeath GAA has paid tribute to Kieran Martin who confirmed his retirement from intercounty football this morning (Friday).
The Maryland clubman played a prominent role during his 16 year career with the Lake County.
Martin's name will be forever etched in Westmeath senior football folklore following his 2-3 scoring contribution to the county's comeback win over rivals Meath in the 2015 Leinster senior football championship,
Martin's status was further heightened in 2022 when the powerful forward scored the all important goal as Westmeath claimed the inaugural Tailteann Cup in 2022.
His contribution to the county cause never waned and although he featured as a substitute in more recent seasons, Martin's determination, drive and team ethic was a source of inspiration to management and players alike.
During his 16 year career in maroon and white, Martin also won Allianz League Division 3, Division 4 and O'Byrne Cup medals.
In a fitting tribute, Westmeath GAA said Martin's "dedication, leadership and unwavering commitment have left a lasting impact on Westmeath football".
"His work rate, physicality, and spirit embodied everything Westmeath supporters value in one of their own".
Referencing Martin's key moments in the Westmeath colours, the county board also paid tribute to the Maryland clubman's family "whose unwavering support has been a cornerstone of Kieran's journey".
"They are often the first familiar faces seen at grounds up and down the country, representing all that is good about the GAA community".
Working in his capacity as a Games Development Administrator in TUS Athlone, Martin will continue his relationship with Westmeath GAA.
"His passion for Westmeath GAA and for nurturing the next generation of player remains as strong as ever".
