Planning extension granted for major housing project
Westmeath County Council has granted an extension to the planning permission for a large residential and student accommodation project in Athlone.
The decision, made on November 10, allows Avenir Homes Ltd. to extend the duration of their original planning approval for a mixed-use development, known as 'The Green Quarter', which involves the construction of 122 residential units, including 60 houses, 62 apartments, and 283 student bedspaces, along with a creche and associated site works.
The development, located in the townlands of Cartrontroy, Kilnafaddoge, Lissywollen, and Ardnaglug, will include apartment blocks rising to heights of five, six, and seven stories. The council has approved the extension subject to a number of conditions.
The project was originally due for completion on June 19, 2027, but has been granted an extension of 3 years and 45 days.
The new planning permission deadline for the project is August 23, 2030.
Located near the Old Rail Trail Greenway and close to the ESB facility in Garrycastle, the project is expected to significantly contribute to the community by providing both residential units and student accommodation in a growing part of Athlone.
