Council: 'no requirement for warning lights' for Summerhill ramps

Roscommon County Council has said it believes there is no requirement for additional signage and warning lights for ramps on the old Galway Road at Summerhill.

The council’s view emerged on foot of a query from Cllr Valerie Duffy at the November meeting of the municipal district as to whether the council planned to review safety and introduce new signage and warning lights in the lead up to and between the road ramps on the R446 at Summerhill, Drum given, as she said that these are “quite challenging to see, particularly at night”.

The Fine Gael councillor was told that the ramps in place at Summerhill are within a 60kph zone with public lighting, numerous signs and sharks teeth markings on the ramps.

The reply also said: “There are also pedestrian lights at this location between the ramps that act as an additional marker for traffic to slow on approach.”

Outlining the warnings, the council said on approach from the Ballinasloe direction, the following signage is in place:

large 60Kph/Athlone signage to highlight the entry to a 60Kph urban area, an electronic speed limit feedback sign, two children crossing warning signs, a ramp warning sign, a traffic signals ahead warning sign and three ‘slow’ stamps on the carriageway.

It said from the Monksland rection, the signage in place includes children crossing warning sign, a ramp warning sign, traffic signals ahead warning sign and three ‘slow’ stamps on the carriageway

“It is considered that adequate lighting and signage is in place at this location and no further signage is recommended,” concluded the written reply to Cllr Duffy’s question.
