'Non-functional' lights at Athlone's St Peter's & Paul's Church need 'complete replacement'

Concerns over the darkened façade of Ss. Peter and Paul's Church have prompted an update from Fr. John Deignan, who confirmed that the floodlights on the sides of the historic building are non-functional due to a system failure.

The lighting, owned and maintained by Westmeath County Council, has reached the end of its operational life. According to Fr. John, the issue requires a complete replacement of both the wiring and fixtures.

The floodlights were originally installed to highlight the church’s architectural significance and its role as a key tourist attraction.

Their absence has left a noticeable gap in the nightscape of Athlone, diminishing the visibility of one of the town’s most iconic landmarks.

Fr. John has been in regular contact with Westmeath County Council and local councillors Frankie Keena and Aengus O’Rourke to establish a timeline for the restoration project.

While the council has completed estimates for the extensive work required, a start date for the replacement has yet to be confirmed.

In the meantime, the parish plans to install temporary lighting along the sides of the church, while continuing discussions with local authorities to expedite the full replacement.

Fr. John expressed gratitude to Councillors Keena and O’Rourke for their support.
